Genetic and Morphological Evidence to Split the Coris julis Species Complex (Teleostei: Labridae) Into Two Sibling Species: Resurrection of Coris melanura (Lowe, 1839) Redescription of Coris julis (Linnaeus, 1758)

چکیده
The genus Coris contains 28 valid species, most of them with an Indo-Pacific distribution and only two species recognized from the eastern Atlantic: atlantica C. julis . This last has a large variability in its coloration, which caused that during first half XIX century sexes were considered as different species. Two liveries have been described for : (i) primary or “ giofredi ,” corresponds to females primary-phase males is common Atlantic Mediterranean populations; (ii) secondary ” secondary-phase males, populations. In this study we demonstrate existence sibling within complex. Morphological molecular analyses showed complex composed species: , distributed mainly Mediterranean, was originally described; C melanura by Lowe 1839 resurrected here, western Mediterranean. We also discuss possible speciation event understand contemporary patterns

Genetic study of Coris julis (Osteichthyes, Perciformes, Labridae) evolutionary history and dispersal abilities.
Microsatellite markers have been used to study the genetic variability of rainbow wrasse (Coris julis) Mediterranean and Atlantic populations. Differentiation tests failed to reveal any significant genetic differentiation among samples from continental Portugal and the Azores, despite more than 1800 km of geographical separation. Preliminary results tended to indicate a significant genetic diff...
متن کاملThe supramedullary cells of the teleost Coris julis (L.): a noradrenergic neuronal system.
This study, carried out on Coris julis (Labridae), is a contribution to the immunocytochemical characterization of fish supramedullary neurons. The significance of these giant cells has been debated since the beginning of the twentieth century. Our research provides the first evidence for a noradrenergic feature of this neuronal system. The possible role of supramedullary neurons as components ...
متن کاملOcean Productivity May Predict Recruitment of the Rainbow Wrasse (Coris julis)
Predicting recruitment fluctuations of fish populations remains the Holy Grail of fisheries science. While previous work has linked recruitment of reef fish to environmental variables including temperature, the demonstration of a robust relationship with productivity remains elusive. Despite decades of research, empirical evidence to support this critical link remains limited. Here we identify ...
متن کاملVariability in reproductive traits in the sex-changing fish, Coris julis, in the Mediterranean
The quantity and quality of propagules, i.e. reproductive output, play a key role in the dynamics of exploited populations, with particular implications for sex-changing fish. ere, we studied for the first time the effects of maternal traits on the reproductive output of the Mediterranean rainbow wrasse Coris julis, a sequential hermaphroditic fish widely distributed in temperate marine coasta...
متن کاملLactococcus garvieae in wild Red Sea wrasse Coris aygula (Labridae).
Lactococcus garvieae infection in wild wrasse Coris aygula is reported, and the serological and molecular characteristics of the isolate are described. This is the first evidence of the presence of this pathogen in the Red Sea, and it follows the recent diagnosis of Mycobacterium marinum and Streptococcus iniae in wild fish from the same region. Whether all 3 pathogens are strains endemic to th...
